Birds of Vermont Museum

The Birds of Vermont Museum teaches visitors about Vermont's birds, their habitat & the environment

The Birds of Vermont Museum that teaches children (and adults!) about birds, their habitat and the environment. Visitors to the Birds of Vermont Museum will find over 470 biologically accurate wood carvings representing Vermont's nesting bird species. The main exhibit is set up with pairs of carved birds with their nests set in a typical Vermont habitat for the species. Additional exhibits show Vermont hawks in flight, explaining how to tell one species from another by their coloring and feather patterns.

The highly-detailed carvings are the work of Bob Spear who has been carving birds for since 1938 -- over 65 years. Spear takes his time making each carving exactly right. His bald eagle took 400 hours to finish, his family of loons took over 850 hours to carve and paint. They're the centerpiece of a wetlands diorama showing dozens of ducks and shore birds.

The Birds of Vermont Museum also has over 100 acres of wildlife preserve, complete with trails, that you can explore. Habitat includes grasslands, woods and a pond to attract a large number of birds. The Birds of Vermont Museum is right next door to Audubon Vermont which has additional wildlife preserve, exhibits and lectures.

Picnic tables are available on the grounds of the Birds of Vermont Museum.

The Museum is open daily from May 1 to October 31 and by appointment during the winter.
